What is in it
One row per market and unit size: the distribution of advertised monthly rates, with the number of observations behind it. These are aggregates — the compilation this site publishes — not a republication of the operator's individual listings.

market_name | The market's common name. Markets are clusters of towns, not city limits. |
state | Two-letter code of the market's primary state. A market may cross a state line. |
unit_size | Advertised footprint, width by depth in feet. |
sq_ft | Nominal area implied by unit_size. The advertised figure, not a survey. |
observations | Surviving advertised prices behind the row. Read the percentiles against it: a p10 over a handful of prices is a price, not a percentile. |
median_usd | The 50th percentile, nearest-rank. The figure to quote for a market and size, and the one every headline on this site is built from. |
typical_spread_pct | How far the 10th and 90th percentile sit apart, as a percentage of the 10th — the same "typical spread" the market pages print. The percentiles it is derived from are on those pages; this file carries the ratio rather than the dollars, so the site's central claim can be checked here without the price ladder for all 1,126 market and size pairs being a download. |
as_of | The date the prices behind the row were read. |
source | Which operator, and on what basis. Identical on every row today; a column rather than a footnote so it survives the file being opened somewhere else. |
Read this before you plot it
One operator. Every figure is Public Storage's own advertised online rate. It is not a
market-wide average, and it should not be labelled as one. It is one operator because that
is what has been collected, not because it is all that can be.
Advertised, not transacted. These are the rates shown to a new customer booking online, on the day they were read. They are not offers, not quotes, and not what a sitting tenant pays.

as the spread. A ranking built on min or max selects the single most
extreme observation in the file by construction.

the index began collecting on 2026-08-27 and a second reading is what makes a change
figure possible. Nothing here should be presented as a trend.
